About

Project Overview

The Terminal/Nicol streetscape is ready for the next phase in its evolution. Current plans for Nanaimo’s downtown, including the Nanaimo Downtown Plan, the Downtown Urban Design Plan and Guidelines, and The South End Neighbourhood Plan envision the Terminal/Nicol corridor as a gateway that welcomes people into Nanaimo’s downtown and provides a preview of what the downtown has to offer. With development potential and road improvements along Terminal/Nicol on the horizon, now is the time to create a streetscape concept that sets the stage to make this happen.

The Terminal Nicol Re-imagined Project is the concept stage and will focus on public priorities for the corridor. It will look at how the elements of a streetscape – including vehicle lanes, pedestrian and cyclist routes, street trees, lighting, parking and more – will fit together to form a complete and vibrant street.

The Terminal Nicol Re-imagined Project is Phase C of a phased approach by the DNBIA, property owners and stakeholders to revitalize the Terminal/Nicol corridor. In 2014, DNBIA and partners were successful on Phase A of revitalization, obtaining an Area-Wide Determination by Ministry of Environment that reduces potential costs and uncertainty for future development. Work is underway on Phase B for an Area Wide Drinking Water Exemption. Learn more about these initiatives by visiting the DNBIA website.
